Do graduates lack specialist skills?
According to an article reported in the Mail Online one in three top businesses had unfilled graduate vacancies last year amid criticisms of the quality of recruits. The report noted an increase in the number of employers failing to meet recruitment targets citing the skills of graduates as a problem (Mail Online 2012).
The shortfall comes in spite of increases in unemployment and in the face of statistics that indicate at least 48 applications per graduate vacancy being received. To add further insult to injury twice as many graduates – than a decade ago – are achieving a first degree (Mail Online 2012).
At the same time it is reported that in the coming years despite the economy there will be a strong demand for IT jobs. A recent High Fliers Graduate report found that IT and telecoms companies plan to take on 32% more young people than in 2011 (Women in Technology 2012).
The message here is clear: despite the present economic conditions, there is a strong demand for workers with specialist skills and workplace experience (Women in Technology 2012).
